Nationally recognized events can be a boon to cities large and small. Socially, they bring people together from far-flung locales and all walks of life.
In 1974, the little big town of Spokane, Wash., changed forever when the city cleaned up a blighted 100-acre area of downtown and used it to host the Expo '74 World's Fair. Then, in 1978—four short years after President Richard Nixon declared Expo '74 “officially open to all the citizens of the world,”—President Jimmy Carter dedicated the former fairgrounds as Spokane's new Riverfront Park.
In a time of “cultural wars,” writing about Los Angeles’ relationship with its Chinatown is fraught with danger. Suffice it to say that Los Angeles Chinatown is a place that mirrors the experiences of an immigrant group targeted by systematic racial discrimination for over two centuries.

San Francisco is known for its beautiful parks and landscapes. A few that come to mind for both residents and visitors are the Presidio, Crissy Field, Golden Gate Park, Dolores Park, and McLaren Park.
These are not your father’s sports. Or your mom’s, come to think of it, and they’d probably cause extreme confusion for plenty of other generations.
As spring sports begin, it’s important to examine the policies and processes in recruiting and signing up volunteers. The National Alliance for Youth Sports’ professional-administrator training course advocates “building a shield” to protect organizations from allegations, and participants from harm.
When Hillary Clinton titled her book, It Takes a Village, published in 2006, I remember pausing to let the title sink in, and then smiled and nodded, as it made so very much sense. The clear reference that many influences are involved in building one’s life had also been the locomotion of my life, and the older I got, that philosophy became clearer.
The sun was shining and my girls were feeling some serious summer vibes. They asked me to take them out for lunch on the deck of a local restaurant – one overlooking our town’s lake.

Just one weekly dose of Salt Master reduces the need for acid, boosts performance and decreases the frequency of necessary balance adjustments and cell cleanings. It keeps equipment in top shape and lengthens the life of salt chlorine generators. This special formula prevents scale buildup on generator cells, pool equipment and surfaces. In fact, most salt chlorine generators can be operated at lower settings after using Salt Master for just a few weeks.

The RYAN Renovaire tow-behind aerator delivers excellent productivity for large sports fields and parks. With six feet of aerating width and an operating speed of four mph, the Renovaire is capable of completing three acres in an hour. Operators can choose between coring spoons or slicing knives, with weight trays that offer control and power to aerate as deep as four inches even in the most heavily compacted soil. When the soil is loosened up after aeration, turf roots can get better access to water, air, and fertilizer, helping them grow deeper and stronger.
