International Lifeguard Appreciation Day

Aquatics Industry Celebrates Lifeguards: First Responders Keeping Patrons Safe, Risking Their Own Lives for Swimmers Around the Globe

JACKSONVILLE, FL—On July 31, Ellis & Associates, the world leader in aquatic safety, operations, and risk management, will launch “International Lifeguard Appreciation Day” in partnership with aquatic facilities around the globe.

The day is designed to celebrate and thank the hundreds of thousands of professional lifeguards that make it their mission to work while others play. Aquatic facility managers, parents, and guests are encouraged to take time to thank the lifeguards on duty at their pool, beach, or water park and give them the greatest gift - follow the facility rules, keep an eye on children and weak swimmers, and willingly follow lifeguard instructions.

“Lifeguards are the frontline heroes of the beach, pool, lake and water park,” says Richard “RAC” Carroll, aquatics industry leader and COO of Ellis & Associates. “They are first responders – trained and certified to assist swimmers and perform life-saving measures when necessary, often putting their own lives at risk.”

In light of COVID-19, lifeguards, along with other public servants, are required to enhance their standard training - which includes CPR, oxygen administration, AED use, and first aid - with new protocol focusing on infectious disease. Lifeguards must constantly train to maintain their rescue skills, provide top-notch guest service and facility safety, keep pool water clean and properly sanitized, and keep a watchful eye on guests.

“This year is especially challenging for the aquatics industry,” adds Carroll. “Lifeguards and their employers have been incredibly innovative and diligent, developing new ways to train and deliver life-saving support that protects both swimmers and the lifeguards that watch over them. The job of a lifeguard may look like fun in the sun but these professionals are serious about safety and dedicated to their role. We want those efforts to be recognized and appreciated.”

Any pool or aquatic facility operator can visit the official International Lifeguard Appreciation Day website to find downloadable graphics and ideas for recognizing their lifeguards and aquatics staff.
