Becky Alcox Awarded Double-Goal Coach Award

Becky Alcox, Head Women’s Soccer Coach at Hilliard Bradley High School in Hilliard, Ohio has won Positive Coaching Alliance’s coveted National Double-Goal Coach Award presented by TeamSnap for her positive impact on youth sports.

Alcox is one of 25 national winners of the Double-Goal Coach Award, named for coaches who strive to win while also pursuing the more important goal of teaching life lessons through sports. The award includes a $1,000 prize and recognition within the website, newsletters and media campaigns of Positive Coaching Alliance (PCA), a national non-profit developing Better Athletes, Better People through character-building workshops for parents, coaches, athletes and administrators in youth and high school sports.

“Coach Alcox helps athletes win in and out of sports,” said Chris Moore, CEO of Positive Coaching Alliance. “By creating a positive, character-building youth sports experience and serving as a Double-Goal Coach, Becky helps youth develop into better athletes and better people.”

When PCA talks about Double-Goal Coaching, they identify coaches who fill player’s emotional tanks, allow mistakes as part of the learning process, and honor the game.  Coach Alcox was described as just that. The player who nominated her shared that, “she wants us to just try, even if we can’t get it right away and she will run drills that aren’t designed for players to necessarily do well in... she just wants us to know that we can do something so we aren’t afraid of trying it on the field. She continued that, “she doesn’t yell or coach us from the sidelines and she is very respectful of parents, players and opposing coaches.”

As is often the case with coaches, they play more than the role of coach alone.  Alcox positively impacted and supported the girls as they dealt with a senior captain with a serious illness. Players shared that she was always there for the team when they needed support and helped them ensure that the ill player knew her team was there for her whether she was contributing to the team or not. These lessons about how to respond as a teammate also correlate to how to be good people when they are done with their playing days.

Many parents who shared references on behalf of the nomination of Coach Alcox, relayed that she is an outstanding role model for these young ladies. The parent of a player shared, “as I stand on the sidelines and watch her team, I am not looking for a winning season. I am not looking for the best soccer skills. I am looking for a team that promotes quality character and positive morals. That is Becky’s goal as a coach.” The overwhelming feeling is that these girls are really lucky to be playing under Coach  Becky Alcox.

Ryan Virtue, Partnership and Development Manager of the PCA-Cleveland Chapter, shared that Becky’s nomination materials highlighted all that it means to be a Double-Goal Coach.  In addition to emphasizing character and mental development in her athletes, she clearly demonstrates what it means to honor the ROOTS (rules, opponents, officials, teammates and self) of the game. “Coach Alcox truly exemplifies the model we look for in a coach and we need more individuals like her to lead and educate our young people through sport.” Virtue said. “We are thrilled to recognize her as the PCA-Cleveland Chapter Coach of the Year.”
