Sappy But Sweet
As Winter slowly melts into Spring, Ohio is wrapping up its maple sugaring season.
Nature's sweet syrup is being made and celebrated across the state, including this weekend at Malabar Farm State Park.
The 35th Annual Maple Syrup Family Festival runs from noon to 4 p.m. March 12 and 13. This free festival is a great opportunity for families and friends to step back in time, learn and enjoy the history of Ohio syrup-making.
There will be demonstrations of sugaring techniques, both historical and modern; tours of the sugar camp and sugarhouse; and a chance for kids and adults to try their hand at pioneer chores such as washing clothes, tending fire, making candles and cooking. Horse-drawn wagon rides will take visitors to the working sugar camp.
Free samples of maple syrup will be available at the sugar house, and you can buy syrup and other maple treats at the gift shop.
If you get hungry for something more substantial, the Malabar Farm Restaurant will be open both days. For reservations or more information call 419-938-5205.
Additionally, overnight accommodations for individuals, groups and families are available at the Malabar Farm Hostelling International - call 419-892-2055 for reservations.
