This Month’s Articles
Now and then I mention some little illustrations to my 16 grandchildren. The habit developed while raising my five kids, coming from my romantic “poet’s” heart (for which I am often accused).
At first blush, winterization doesn’t seem as cumbersome as other fall-maintenance tasks like leaf removal. Park visitors, too, may not think much of it beyond the inconvenience of a few closed restrooms.
For nearly 100 years, Garden City, Kan., was home to a pool so big you could water-ski across it. The hand-dug pool was so expansive that, for years, the local zoo’s elephants would lumber across the street after the pool closed for the season to take a dip.
In late September 2020, a lunch conversation at a local pizza shop in Clayton, N.C., spurred the idea for the Friends of Johnston County Parks—a volunteer coalition advocating in support of parks, open space, the arts, and recreational opportunities.
An estimated 6.1-million American children between the ages of 2 and 17—9.4 percent—have been diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), according to a study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
The past two years have been tough for park and recreations centers around the country. Numerous facilities were closed for months due to the pandemic.
Wildly popular at the youth level, soccer and lacrosse are big tournament draws. One of the most successful formats—and one seeing tremendous growth—is small-sided play.
Outdoor recreation is a growing industry. Broadly defined as activities that engage a participant with nature, outdoor recreation involves activities such as camping, hiking, mountaineering, snowboarding, skiing, fishing, hunting, and climbing.
For most kids and parents, volunteers are “the face” of a sports league. Most programs cannot happen without them. Recruiting and retaining great volunteers will not only make a league better but also make your job as an administrator much easier.
The National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS) has always championed the idea that active kids are likely not only to be more physically fit but to be mentally healthy as well. This is especially important during the recent and present situations involving the pandemic.

My wife walked out of the house—two big floats flung over her shoulder and a smile on her face. It was just a few days before Labor Day and we knew the time spent floating aimlessly around the lake was limited.

Contractors can install the LXME2 or LXME2 PRO as new controllers or as easy retrofits to existing LXME and LXMEF models in the field. Thanks to an intuitive user interface with simple dial positions, new soft buttons—like the dedicated “Back” and “Language” buttons—and a backlit screen, they’re easy for contractors and end users to program. The controllers can be expanded from 12 to 48 stations using 12-station modules, and both models support Simulstation capability, enabling them to run up to five stations at once for maximum efficiency in tight water windows.

FlowSurf was created out of over 30 years of experience in the stationary wave industry, but it looks a bit different than the average product in the FlowRider lineup. FlowSurf is created using a deep flow of water, which enables guests to use a real surfboard to carve a never-ending wave. It is designed to accommodate all skill levels. A bar can be used to help beginners gain their confidence on the wave, and skilled surfers get the unique experience of shredding a wave that keeps pumping endlessly.
