This Month’s Articles
When spending time with others—friends, family, or people in one’s support networks—food is often a prerequisite. Whether at a holiday dinner, backyard barbecue, or picnic in the park, some of the most cherished memories are not only of those whom we saw or what we talked about, but also what was on our plates.
When it comes to facility renovations in many park and recreation facilities, the one area that nearly all administrators want to upgrade is the restrooms.
Inspection requirements for recreation facilities can be fairly extensive. Whether it’s inspecting playgrounds, fire extinguishers, filter changes, fire alarms, trash cans, etc., there is a lot to consider.
Frogtown Community Center in St. Paul, Minn., located on the site of the former Scheffer Recreation Center, is a vibrant hub of cultural inclusivity and wellness-driven activity. While the 1970s center may have brought community together in the past, in the present it needed a ground-up overhaul to connect with the diversity of the current community.
One of the up-and-coming forms of volleyball is played on snow. In fact, the sport is expected to experience a veritable blizzard of growth in years to come.
The Sports Ranch at Sommers Bend, located in Temecula, Calif., opened to the public in February 2022. The city-owned and –operated, 20-acre, $11.8-million park was a turn-key project constructed by the developers of the Sommers Bend master-planned community (Woodside Homes of Southern California and Wingsweep Corporation), part of a larger development agreement with the city that also included roads, trails, and other public improvements.
Proper planning is the cornerstone of any well-run, community-recreation program. In coordinating any high-level program, planning is customizable in how an organization chooses to operate. Below are some guidelines to have in place for these programs.
This past fall, the National Alliance for Youth Sports had the opportunity to present an educational session at several industry conferences. The title of the session was “Compliance in Youth Sports—Setting Standards and Enforcing Requirements.” For those unable to attend, here’s a snapshot.
A friend of mine does small- to medium-sized construction jobs—he installs driveway fences/gates, room dividers, drywalls and tapes a kitchen ceiling, etc. Most of his business comes by word of mouth. People see his work and ask who did the job.
Both my 15-year-old daughters passed driver’s ed. All that stood in the way of an actual, honest-to-goodness driver’s license was 50 hours of daytime and 10 hours of nighttime driving—all conveniently tracked in an app—which meant no cheating or rounding up. Dang.
