Throughout the last two years, many industries have struggled to recruit, hire, and retain workers. Aquatic departments haven’t been immune to these challenges, but unlike other employers, they faced a labor shortage before the pandemic.
There’s no question that the aquatic industry has faced many challenges since the pandemic began. The challenges in forcing pool and water-park operators outside their comfort zone seem like they are here to stay for a while.
In the event of a medical emergency, who is the best person to respond? We’ve all watched the scenes from medical dramas—first responders rushing to the scene of an emergency with flashing lights and blaring sirens.
“Tweet, tweet, tweet.” “Call 911.” “Grab me the backboard.” These are some of the sounds you’ll hear on the pool deck during the annual, preseason Lifeguard Bootcamp at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point in North Carolina.
While beach volleyball was added to the Olympics in 1996, there is plenty of evidence to suggest the sport originated in Hawaii in the early 1900s. Like surfing, the activity was carried to the United States, becoming a fixture in California—where it was noticed by the rest of the world.
It seems like there are only a few things that can bring people together anymore—music, sports, and holidays. Even then, holidays can be tricky.
All league administrators should have a budget in place before taking a single registration. The budget should estimate revenue and expenses and separate them as individual line items.
In 2013, I went to grad school after being in the workforce for 20 years. One of the first activities my classmates and I took part in was the Myers-Briggs assessment to determine the characteristics of our personalities.
When my overnight sleep medication—approved by four of five doctors—wore off this morning, I rose from my adjustable bed, disabled the automatic heat function, and set my apnea machine to the “clean” mode. I put on copper-lined socks, stepped into cross-training shoes and shorts, and walked to the den.
Our home state of Idaho (and neighboring Wyoming) is home to wonderful rivers -the Selway, Payette, Boise, Salmon, Saint Joe, Malad, and the mighty Snake. If you follow these rivers to their end, you’ll find them running into the Pacific Ocean via the Columbia River, into Great Salt Lake in Utah and even all the way to the Atlantic Ocean on the east coast.

Winter months are often cold and dry—the perfect scenario for causing floor drains to dry up. The result is the release of sewer gas smells into a building. Forget pouring water or bleach down the drain, as this is a temporary fix. Instead, mix 3 ounces of EverPrime in a gallon of water and pour down problem drains. It prevents pipes under the drain from drying out for months. And EverPrime is not impacted by cold, hot, or dry weather.

Fecon introduces the RK6015, a new, wider, standard flow mulcher head which is ideal for use with most standard skid steer loaders, Avant-type wheel loaders, and other carriers that are able to provide 17-27 gpm of hydraulic flow, have enclosed cabs that can be properly protected with the appropriate polycarbonate guarding, and have the ability to carry the 1465-pound attachment. Operating at 2,400 rpm, it can easily shred brush and small trees up to 5 inches in diameter, making it an excellent tool for general vegetation management, creating “defensible space” for fire prevention, clearing fence rows, lot and land cleanup, and much more.

After listening to a presentation on inclusion by Krista Rappoccio from Move United at the most recent Youth Sports Congress, I remembered one of my favorite volunteer youth-coaching experiences. It was the last season my daughter played in recreational soccer.
